The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has issued the second-in-a-series video in their education campaign about personal care products. Their message is that some of the products we use each day may contain synthetic chemicals we are unaware of. Because the federal government either lacks the authority or the inclination to legislate labeling in cosmetics, consumers aren’t given the information they need to make informed decisions.

Watch the video and go to www.safecosmetics.org to get involved in their efforts.

The awful truth is, personal care products are not regulated.

Personal care products, unfortunately, are one of the least regulated consumer commodities on the market. Our bodies absorb what we put on it, much the way our mouths absorb what we put in it, so the contents of sunscreens, lotions, cosmetics, deodorants, fragrances, hair products – even on our babies’ butts, should be regulated, don’t you think?

But the awful truth is, they are not. According to the Food and Drug Administration’s own website, “Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to FDA pre-market approval authority…” So basically, manufacturers put what they want in their products. Further, “Cosmetic firms are responsible for substantiating the safety of their products and ingredients before marketing.” So who is to judge whether a product is potentially bad for you?

That is not to say that cosmetic and grooming companies are purposely poisoning us for greed’s sake. But old safety and environmental assumptions change every day, and there is no governmental agency guiding the production of these products to make sure they are adhering to the latest research.

Until now. One group has taken on the challenge:

“The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental organizations. Our collective goal is to protect the health of consumers and workers by requiring the personal care products industry to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health concerns, and replace them with safer alternatives. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is working with more than 100 endorsing organizations, responsible businesses and thousands of citizen activists to shift the cosmetics market toward safer products and to advocate for smarter laws that protect our health from toxic chemicals and encourage innovation of safer alternatives.”

The organization has begun a series of videos to educate people on the myth of cosmetic safety. LookinGood will run all of videos in the future and hope that you will join the organization and support their efforts.

After all, you can still be smart and look good.
