Gray Matter

graymatterWashin’ that gray right oughta your hair?

Could there come the day when we get rid of gray hair by taking a pill? In an article published online Feb. 23, 2009 in the FASEB Journal (The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology,) researchers say they have isolated a root cause of aging hair: too much hydrogen peroxide in our systems. All of our hair, apparently, produces a little hydrogen peroxide.

WebMD explains, “The process starts when there is a dip in levels of an enzyme called catalase. That catalase shortfall means that the hydrogen peroxide that naturally occurs in hair can’t be broken down. So hydrogen peroxide builds up in the hair, and because other enzymes that would repair hydrogen peroxide’s damage are also in short supply, the hair goes gray.”

Of course this doesn’t mean you should cancel the monthly date with your stylist, but now might be a good time to buy pharmaceutical stock.

I just let the second-graders ask “Why is your hair white?” Actually Lori, you find that the Root Touch Up matches the salon color? That seems a better alternative than snapping “Why isn’t your assignment done?” at a 7-year-old.

Very interesting! I’ve been coloring my hair since I was 18! I have figured out a cheaper way to keep up the color in between salon visits; Clairol Root Touch Up. It’s about $7, and it matches my dark auburn hair perfectly!

A short history of cosmetics

150BC Romans use yellow eye shadow.

The Romans preferred to use gold-colored eye shadow which was made from saffron and painted onto the area around the sides and under their eyes. Then they used powdered wood ash to color their eyelids black. This gold color was quite significant at the time because they saw themselves as the rulers of the Mediterranean.
